Three UK, one of the larger telecoms in that neck of the woods is taking a cue from other providers worldwide. Using an app, Three will allow wi-fi calling and texting to their customers. This app will be available to all customers beginning in early August.
This app, called Three inTouch, will allow for calls and texts in areas where their usual cellular service is sub par or worse. Using the app seems to still impact your balance of call time or text limits. We have reached out to Three to verify this. Stay tuned for an edit when an official line is established. The app itself is free to download.
If you are on a contract customer, Pay As You Go (PAYG) or SIM customer this may be worth a download. To not have service is horrible. To not have service and have an out when a wi-fi connection is available is clearly a step up. Still, I’d like to see this work more like T-Mobile in the States where wi-fi calling does not impact your plan in terms of minutes or prepaid time.
Being a Yank, I’m particularly interested in feedback as to how people feel about this approach. If you would like to sound off, there is a comments section below.
