Sprint is finally joining the other US carriers in the prepaid game today. Sprint prepaid will offer off contract service to customers to help them avoid long-term commitments. This is a “no credit check”, fairly standard prepaid offering.
There are two plans being offered with Sprint prepaid. “Smart” offers unlimited talk and text for $45 per month, however no data at all. They specify “Wi-Fi enabled data only” and this will not be available on the iPhone 4S. Smart Plus runs $60 and offers unlimited talk, text and data, where unlimited means 2.5GB of high-speed data.
Devices at launch are slim pickins. If you want to take advantage of Sprint prepaid’s Spark offerings, you’ll have to go with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. If LTE is all you need, you can choose the Galaxy S3. Motorola’s Moto G is available, however it will only reach 3G speeds.
Some of Sprint’s service are available on Sprint prepaid. Phone insurance is allowed, as well as Money Express which allows customers to send money, load checks and pay bills. Other additional services such as directory assistance and international calling are also available.
Personally, I don’t see any reason to choose Sprint prepaid over the other MVNOs. Further, Sprint coverage isn’t what it should be and 3G speeds are awful. My recommendation is to look elsewhere for a prepaid solution, but if Sprint is awesome where you live, at least you have an option.
