Samsung is pretty keen with TouchWiz which pretty much replaces Android’s look and feel, to the point where they add features to the clipboard, without fully testing them. A bug highlighted by Terence Eden shows that some devices crash when you copy and paste 20 times
What’s even better about this bug is that Samsung have been aware of it since October 29th which is more than enough time to push out a bug fix. All they say is:
This bug was reported and I think that it will be resolved soon.
The error that appears is a NullPointerException which can be a simple problem to solve, however the fact that this reboots the entire phone is crazy and Samsung should have designed their 20 item buffer a bit better. (Samsung, if you’re reading this simply Broadcast an event like ACTION_ITEM_CLIPPED and save it in the Keyboard app, which if it crashes a “Samsung Keyboard has stopped” box will appear and that’s it, or just contribute the feature to AOSP where it can be fixed properly)
How do you get around it? Well, if you’re rooted you have a couple of options, you can swap in a custom ROM (which most rooted users probably use already and are not affected) or make sure the “/data/clipboard” folder doesn’t get over 19-20 items in it.
There’s even a video to show you that the device does restart for copying a bit of text:
So far it seems at least the Samsung Note 2, Galaxy S 3 and the Note tablets are affected.
