Earlier today ITV sent out a press release regarding their ITV Player app’s latest update. The part of the press release that most caught the eye was regarding handset comatibility. Rather than specify a set of minimum specs or even a required version of Android the press release instead stated that due to Android fragmentation the app would only be available on Samsung devices until the end of August. Obviously there are a great many non Samsung devices that would happily run this app so it seems that this is infact a very thinly disguised attempt to conceal a media content tie in. Why they feel the need to hide it in this way is beyond me.
So what exactly are your options if you have a non-samsung device? Well you could just install the app anyway. That’s right, there is absolutely no reason this wont run on your Android device. It has been tested on a HTC One with custom ROM, a HTC One X with a non rooted stock ROM, and an old Xperia X10i running Ginger Bread. The APK is linked below.

To install you must have ‘unknown sources’ ticked in System Settings–Security then just download this file and install.
