The Nexus 4 has had its availability issues in the past but has settled down recently, the official bumper continues to be in short supply however. GenX have capitalised on this and released bumpers that are very close to the official products design but available in a range of colours. I’ve been using one for the last few days.
The case is a combination of plastic and rubber. A plastic band around the centre with rubber on the top and bottom to provide protection in the event of a fall. The case feels really light and well made and feels like one part even though it’s actually 2 stuck together.
Putting the case on is incredibly easy. I went volume buttons first and then clicked the rest of the case round. Once on the Nexus 4 it follows the design aesthetic of the phone nicely and people I asked couldn’t notice there was a case on the phone.
The front and the back of the case are completely open allowing full access to the back, which of course is handy for NFC and wireless charging as well as showing off the pattern on the rear of the phone.
The buttons on the case are incredibly tactile and give good feedback when pressed. Just like the official bumper they act as an extension to the buttons on the actual device rather than just having a cutout.
On the bottom of the case is a large cutout for plugging in the charger/USB Cable. I had no problems plugging in any of the myriad of Micro USB cables I have on my desk. There is also a very small cutout for the microphones both on the top and the bottom.
On top is the cutout for the 3.5mm headphone jack. Again, I had no issues with this but admittedly all of my headphones have relatively small adapters, larger ones could potentially cause an issue.
Overall, I am really pleased with this case, it’s a good alternative to the official case even if it is a bit more expensive. The added value is that the case comes in a range of colours so you can differentiate yourself somewhat, whilst still having a decent case. The case solves the issue I’ve had with the Nexus 4 slipping off of almost every surface I put it on. This gives protection without spoiling the look of the phone.
This particular Nexus 4 Case was supplied by Mobile Fun and costs £19.99 at time of writing. I’d recommend this to anyone who wants the benefits of the official bumper but either can’t get one or would prefer a different colour.
