Love it or hate it, Facebook is one of the most popular social media services at the moment. As a result most smartphones provide it as part of the main software of your phone. I have had the same on my HTC ONE X.
A lot of consumers have been reporting that the app runs quite sluggish and slow so I decided to get on the case myself, and whilst I’m not the most active user, I gave it a good run for a couple of weeks. Unsurprisingly, I found out that the complaints were right. Most of the time it spends ages loading things up, and I often found myself giving up on reading and thinking I’d rather check that on my computer (Yeah, it was actually that bad).
Snooping around on the internet, and a few recommendations from friends on Twitter suggested that I should uninstall and re-install the app. Interestingly, HTC ONE X does not allow you to do that though it does allow you to uninstall all the updates.
While sceptical, I tried this approach:
- Go to your Play Store, hit ‘Uninstall’ on your Facebook app, and realize that instead of un-installing, it only gets rid of all the updates.
- Hit ‘Update’ now and it re-installs all the updates.
- Once finished, it wants your password again, and voila, suddenly the app is working a lot better than it ever has.
I think the issues are with how the app caches it’s data. It probably clogs itself up, and is unable to do much more. Whether this is the definitive answer or not, I do not know yet. What I know is that it worked for me.
Hopefully the app developers will pay heed and get rid of this issue. It has gone on for about 3-4 years now, and we are yet to see a decent Facebook app for Android!
