Sprint is partnering with Best Buy to offer students a “deal” on new lines. Activation of a new line on Sprint as a student will allow you to gain free year of service (unlimited talk, text, 1GB data) for one year. There are stipulations in place, however.
Firstly, you’ll have to prove to Sprint that you are a student. This can be done at http://mysprint.sprint.com/studentverify/?ECID=vanity:studentverify. Verification must be completed within 14 days of the activation.
Secondly, the handset pricing seems to be unsubsidized. You will have to be willing to pay full retail price for the device you wish to activate. I’ve included a chart below (source: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/mobile-phones/student-deals-phone-and-pricing/pcmcat317600050016.c?id=pcmcat317600050016&type=category&id=pcmcat317600050016) which will lay out just how much you’ll be dropping on the phone by itself.
Thirdly, there are fees associated with the line that are not covered under the “free” service. These are not clearly spelled out, however they include up to $2.50 admin fees, and $.40 reg fees. Let’s not forget about that $36 activation fee when you activate the line. If you use over the 1GB limit, you’ll be charged 1.5 cents per MB. This data cap can be lifted for an additional $10 a month, which upgrades you to unlimited data.
What seems like a decent offer becomes very opaque. There is a huge upfront cost, and the free year of service doesn’t mean free. This may still be a decent deal for some people, depending on usage and financial situation. Just be aware of what you’ll be agreeing to, and do the math for yourself.
