You are sitting there asking the question “who the hell is Linus Torvalds” aren’t you? Well if you have heard of the Linux Kernel then he was the guy who initiated it… well that and a lot more but if you want to find out more you can check out Wikipedia.
Anyway, back to the story in hand… it looks like Linus has come to the rescue of pretty much every Android Manufacturer out there in the on-going patents battle that see’s Microsoft take a share of revenue from a lot of Android OEMs.
Linus stepped up and helped convince an an ITC Administrative LAW Judge named Theodore R. Essex that Microsoft’s patent, which related to storing filenames with a lot of characters in file systems like FAT, was invalid.
It turns out that Mr Torvalds had posted about long filenames used in a compatible manner with short filenames, and that post predated the Microsoft patent by three years.
What happens next then? Well, if the patent is proved to be invalid not only will Microsoft lose the rights to ask for licence fees, they will also lose money that they have previously charged costing them a fair old penny.
