Vodafone offering discounted upgrades to 4G handsets–no idea when though…

Vodafone have published a page on their website offering owners of Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II or iPhone 5 handsets a deal for upgrading to a 4G version of their device. It is a bit of an oddity as Vodafone don’t currently have a 4G network and the auction for them to buy spectrum hasn’t happened yet.

Essentially the ‘deal’ is that if your handset is in ‘as new’ condition you can pay up the remainder of your contract with a 70% discount. You are then free to start a new contract at normal prices with a 4G handset. There are quite a few other stipulations in the T’s &C’s, which are quite hard to fathom out, particularly as

they contradict themselves:

How do you qualify?

  1. You need to sign up to a new 4G contract with a 4G phone.
  2. You’ve bought a qualifying handset from us between 12th September 2012 and 31st March 2013 (or 26th October and 31st March 2013 for the Samsung Galaxy SIII (purchased after October 26th 2012).
  3. You’ve paid three monthly bills on your plan.

When does the offer end?
On the 31st December 2013.

Vodafone are unable to list their 4G handsets yet, or give a date when their 4G network will be up and running.

It seems to me that this is a bit of a pointless offer to be advertising now – who in their right mind is going to take this up without knowing when they can get a device, and more importantly, when they can use the 4G network.
