Virgin Media Wi-Fi launches in the London Underground

Virgin Media has launched it’s free WiFi service for the London Underground allowing all passengers to have free connectivity this summer, which will be great for those travelling during the Olympics. Currently only a few stations have WiFi connectivity, however they’re hoping for many more by July. This will bring some form of signal to those phone addicts who hate going anywhere without it.

From today you can get on the WiFi network in King’s Cross and Warren Street Tube stations. Oxford Circus and Green Park Tube with Victoria and Euston going live by tomorrow, which is a good few. By July Virgin are expecting 80 stations to be connected, finishing with 120 by the end of the year which is great news.  This is amazing progress for this, especially as it has only taken 3 months to connect the 2 large stations to the internet.

Borris Johnson is also pleased with this:

“We need to ensure London is able to cement its position as Europe’s leading digital city. Our partnership with Virgin Media to make WiFi available on Tube platforms will be of tremendous benefit as building world class connectivity is critical to supporting new businesses and the jobs they create, especially in the high-tech and creative sectors.”

All passengers will need to do is enter their email address, and for now you don’t need to be a Virgin Media customer, with the only downfall being that in the actual tunnels you will obviously have no connectivity at this moment and adult content will be blocked as it is a public area after all.

The service will provide extras such as content from Virgin Media’s partners Time Out, Spotify and MyMovies.net (which kind of brings it up the level you can receive in Japan) and up to the minute information from TfL
