Those of you who are faithful fans of Apple have had Viddy for a while now but alas for the Android fans amongst us we need wait no longer, it’s finally available in the play store to download (for free).
It’s another social media type application, yes another one for you to keep up to date with! But this one is as you may have guessed video based, where users share short edited video clips with one another, cue clips of cute kittens, drunken pranks etc, etc. I’d say it’s sort of like the status update feature of FB, but using video.
I’m new to Viddy, I’ve seen people posting things across Facebook but never really paid attention to them. Probably due to the fact I’ve been on Android for a while so I didn’t have the right operating system to view the videos that were doing the rounds, a “problem” I have no longer!
So from a first time user perspective it downloaded and installed fairly quick from the play store. You’re greeted with 3 variations of log in, via Facebook, Twitter, or your own email account. Being lazy I opted for the Facebook option in the hope I wouldn’t have to mess around entering passwords, I was right. So there I was logged in and ready to go, greeted with the video selection page:
Its already picked up the videos in my phone, and as you can clearly see most of them are shots of my dog. I promise you I’m not some kind of animal weirdo! There’s also an option for you to shoot a video there and then.
For test purposes I chose the rather amusing video of my dog trying to get through a fence with a giant stick in her mouth and failing in a scooby do type fashion. This takes you to the editing screen which is very simplistic and shows you the first shot of your video and then a time bar which allows you to slide through the footage to the desired point. I quickly spotted that you can only have clips of 15 seconds or under, which is probably a good idea for an app of this nature.
Once you’ve chosen the clip length it loads into a new screen where you choose the three main editing options:
The FX are reminiscent of instagrams filters selection and are pre set in to the app. I’ve not had chance to go through them all and unfortunately a preview isn’t available of your video in each of the different FX’s, something that will hopefully evolve in a future update.
You can add a track or chose to have none to supplement the visuals. Once you’ve decided you’re good to go and ready for an online slaughtering by the Viddy community and your mates. It comes with the standard “upload to Facebook, Twitter, et al”.
I’ve had quite a good reaction to the the first upload so far with people leaving comments and “likes”. It could do with Google+ sharing option.
All in all I quite like it, I’ve browsed through other user videos which is quite easy and quick. I didn’t encounter many bugs although some of the comments in the play store indicate there have been a few minor issues. It’s definitely worth a try and for the price, or lack of a price its good.
