[REVIEW] Proporta Beachbuoy Cycle Mount

When I was asked to review this I expected a nice sturdy plastic handlebar mount, with a nice fancy waterproof cover. Instead I opened the parcel to see this.

Yip, a bag, some string, a bit of foam, and a tea bag. That’s right, a tea bag. I guess it’s to calm you down when you see the pack contents, and very nice it was too.

The bag is obviously not a normal bag, instead it is water resistant to 5M using a nice sturdy three part sealing system. And the string is actually high quality ties with tension fasteners. The way it works is this, you put your handset in the hard foam cradle and the put both in the bag. Then seal the bag, and then loop the ties around the central column on the handlebars. The fit is surprisingly tight and stable, with little movement. As you can see from the picture there is a large viewing area, making almost all the handset visible. I must say though, that I use an S2 and it fits fine, but anything bigger might be a little tight in the foam cradle. The viewing area is also capacitive, so operating the handset is a breeze. My only real gripe is that as well as using my phone for tracking my workout, I also want to use it for music while riding, and with the ultra dry sealing system thats just not possible. I will confess however, that I believe its aimed at the all terrain, all weather cyclist as opposed to the casual ride in the park folk like me.

The Proporta does deliver on performance, and for dryness there is even a tissue test they recommend you try before you use it, and if it fails you send it back for a replacement. During the testing I gave the mount it had no issues what so ever. As an added bonus, Proporta recommend using ViewRanger software on your device, and even include a voucher that you can redeem it from their site to get £7.99 off detailed maps for use with the app instead of the standard OS maps that are included free.

The bottom line with this product is, if you are an all weather, cycling enthusiast its great. But if you are more of a fair weather casual type then its slight overkill, plus you may even find that it stops you using your phone how you want on the road.

At least the tea was nice.
