Nexus 7 screen flicker

A number of users are reporting significant screen flicker from the Nexus 7 tablet under low light conditions.  The issue appears to surface when back-light is dimmed under 30%, a weak WiFi signal and the device is accessing the net.

I noticed this flicker myself last night on the device.  The screen brightness was low and I was uploading data at the time.  The flicker appeared to be worse when looking at an angle.

Although certainly not a deal-breaker for the Nexus 7, I do hope this is something Google will be able to provide a fix for.

    Noticed that myself. :(
Just applied a stock ROM with tweaks last night, hope the issue has gone for me.

From my experience it is linked to the way the Nexus 7 handles it’s backlight, it takes massive steps sometimes. I installed Lux to smooth it out and the problem is gone.

Can I ask how you’re using Lux to solve this? I’m still having the problem

I’m just using it like the app is designed. I just installed it, set it up and it handles the backlight gradient much better. I haven’t noticed the flicker since the first few days I had the Nexus because I have had Lux installed since then. Not sure how to help you.

I have a Google I/o nexus 7 and mine also has screen flicker at low light levels. I’m hoping for a software fix.

i called google and they said it was a hardware problem, and to exchange it with the retail outlet the i purchased it from. this is likely the reason the 16GB is no longer in stock on the play store… he said they were making a new batch that would address the hardware issue, and no software patch would be able to fix it.

Dave what number did you call. I reordered mine and got it jusst in time to take on a trip with me and noticed this issue immediately . Also how has your battery life been. Lastnight full charge , then turned unit off, the next day when I turned in on it was at 25% charge. My ipad can go weeks left on with network access turned off…love the tablet though, purchased ine from Goofle Play Store.

According to the app “Custom Auto Brightness” by Dmitry Matuzko, it might be the light sensor. It jumps around like crazy, even when the light isn’t changing. Using that app instead of the built-in autobrightness seems to have helped my Nexus 7 a bit.

Mine is flickering too. Exactly as described in this report. Low WiFi, low light levels. It is not limited to a particular app or anything. I have just downloaded lux too to see if it makes a difference. Good tablet, very poor flicker feature. It is probably more to do with an EMI interference issue radiated from the WiFi transmitter if I had to guess.
