Cannocial has announced that it wants to bring its popular Linux distribution Ubuntu to mobile devices, starting with those built on Android. The idea is because Android runs on a Linux kernel, that should be more than enough to run a whole computer as the manufacturers already build the kernel.
However, don’t think that your old G1 is going to be supported. Cannocial says that devices are going to need at least
- Dual-core 1GHz processor
- 512mb of RAM
- 2GB of storage
- USB Host Mode
- HDMI Out
This is because they want to make it so your phone can just be plugged into a screen and keyboard and away you go, a full desktop in your pocket.
However, on the Ubuntu website there are only screenshots of the Android interface with Ubuntu background on devices, this could be due to early press shots. As an Ubuntu user myself, this is a nice thing to be able to have, however I’d like to see Xubuntu or something reduce those requirements and see it as a custom ROM option.
