Motorola have a service and product that has huge potential. Webtop. Now WebTop hasn’t been a massive success and although it has support for a number of devices in Motorola’s range it hasn’t really taken off as everyone had hoped. WebTop users are able to dock there devices and it transforms there phone into laptop like computer.
Why hasn’t it taken off? – It’s Motorola of course and the devices they have are not exactly inviting people in to get them, the lapdock is quite pricy as well and progression has been pretty slow on the uptake. Recently a leaked video though of WebTop 3.0 Beta has been uploaded to YouTube, And I admit it looks quite nice and as though finally some decent progression is being made.
This is being shot and used by a user with the name revowii and he is apparently running the beta off a Droid RAZR with the ICS leak. He notes “This is NOT a soak test. I will never leak soak test information as I have to sign a waiver”. Where does he get this from? – Well with Motorola ICS ROM’s leaking out, the users who have these flashed are now able to take advantage and try out Webtop 3.0 Beta.
It’s now looking like a much nicer experience, with a scaled up and optimized vanilla stock ICS look and feel, although with Motorola no doubt adding some bits and pieces. Chrome beta was tried as you will see the video and it didn’t work, a touchy subject for many on ICS as well recently. Firefox which was used before in Webtop is now gone and the stock Android browser is being used. What comes from this and carries over to the full release is unsure, but it certainly should be an area Motorola should be pushing and concentrating on. Lower the price, make it available and you will be on to a winner Moto.
Let us know what you think here. Should Motorola concentrate on this area and exploit a market for users with a good service and product? or is Ubuntu for Android going to just blow WebTop out of the water with its similar service and product?
