If you haven’t already seen the post that I wrote on Thursday the please take a read before continuing with the rest of this one as it will explain a lot about this announcement.
Do you remember the days when Tamagotchi Cyber Pets were all the rage? When you fed and played with your Tamagotchi it grew up and became something completely different however if you neglected it your Tamagotchi would simply die.
Land of Droid is a bit like my own Tamagotchi, I fed it news and reviews, watched as it grew larger and brought in some new writers to keep it company when I wasn’t around however those writers also had their own lives to lead and in turn I felt like my Tamagotchi was being neglected and feared it would die if I didn’t turn things around.
I re-arranged some things, spoke to my team and made created a better system for managing the site however that would only last for around a month or so given that my full time job had placed a ban on me being able to use the internet for non work related things during the day… Now it’s worth noting that I didn’t post news or reviews when I was at work however I did, when quiet, catch up on Twitter and reply to emails etc…
With this new ban in place at work, things were again on the downward slope, I feared that the time I would normally spend posting news and reviews at night would now be taken up by replying to mails and catching up with the social networks which would mean that the posts would suffer again.
I stated on my previous post that the site had grown far beyond anything I ever imagined it could have and the reason behind the success was pretty much down to the news we broke (often first) and the team that I had behind the site working their arses off to maintain that.
When the post when up on Thursday advising that Land of Droid as it is just now would be closing and the site was for sale I was pretty much instantly sent about 4 emails from other site owners asking how much I wanted for the site however pretty much all of them wanted mergers with Land of Droid.
Mergers is something I have never been a fan of, just like anyone I could always see my site incorporating others however not my site being incorporated by others. With that being said, I took this as a HUGE compliment, these guys felt that the site me and my team had created was good enough to be incorporated into their already successful sites. For that I want to thank not just the 4 that instantly emailed me but the others who later emailed and contacted me with similar offers.
On top of the emails and chats I had with other site owners I was astounded to see the feedback from the community which we had now become a rather large part of. A lot of the feedback given by that community blew my mind away and infact one of the comments particularly that caught my eye was by Cool Smartphone’s very own James Pearce “Is it too early to start to poach the
@landofdroid writers? Hmmm wonder what @landofJohn thinks.”
To a lot of people this may have sounded awful as the first tweet in reply to us closing the site however I looked at that Tweet very differently. Here was a respected member of the Tech community who works for a respected site talking about approaching members of my team who would now without a site to write for. This is a HUGE compliment not just to Land of Droid but to the team that made Land of Droid what it was / is so I thank you for that James, it brought a tear to a grown mans eye.
Getting back on track now… I couldn’t just ignore those comments, I could clearly see how much we were doing for the community and how much the site was respected which made me look at other ways to keep the site running as it was under my beady little eyes.
This led me to this…..
Land of Droid will stay as it is and posting news and reviews the way it always have, infact if anything it will be posting MORE news and MORE reviews than ever before. Not just that but we will also be working on getting our giveaways via developers and manufacturers up and running again too which is a thank you to you our readers and to the other sites out there that have shown us great support.
On top of the above we will now be looking at ways to work closer with some other sites who offer a very unique service to the Android community such as Free Your Android and Android UK News Etc… We feel that the service both these sites offer is so far detached from what we do as a site and that they are such great sites that it would make so much more sense to find a way to work closer together.
So, how do we plan on achieving that? Well I can’t go into too much detail about that simply because it is specific to the way the site runs and well we can’t go giving away that sort of info now can we?
I will confirm however that we have not found new advertisers, had a whopping advertising deal or been bought over.
Now, will I have the same team members as we have always had on the site? That’s very unlikely given that a few of them have had other offers to write for other sites and I fully support them on their moves, wish them the best of luck and thank them for all their efforts on Land of Droid.
Do we need new team members then? Well we are always on the lookout for new writers however that being said, we are not on a huge recruitment drive and we will continue to look for people actively the same we we always have and encourage people to use our Guest Writer feature of the site to contribute their own news, reviews or editorials to Land of Droid.
So now that you all know what’s happening, I really want to thank everyone for their kind words of support for the site and the team for all the have said and done to ensure the site can continue as it was before or even better.
I hope you all understand why the decision has been made like this and I look forward to working even closer with you all throughout the future of the site.
