It’s been a little over 2 weeks now since the closed Beta game Ingress became the talking point of every Android user and today it was underwent it’s fist ever update. The app version has went from 1.00.0 to 1.04.0 however there is no changelog listed which makes it impossible to see what was changed, well that is until Niantic Labs Brandon Badger posted on Google+
Hi. If you already have your #ingress code and are playing, we’ve pushed an updated version of the game to the Android Play Store. This fixes some bugs and improves performance.
We continue to send out activation codes. Our engineers are working hard to increase capacity so that we can increase the invitation rate. Eventually everyone will get an invite.
You can still earn special invites by submitting artwork to the #ingress stream here on G+.
It’s been 12 days now since I got my own invite and shared my initial thoughts on the app so how am I finding it now that the massive need to get an invite was resolved?
Well in honesty my opinions haven’t changed too much, the game is still an amazing piece of work and it has done a great job of capturing people, so much so that someone nearly got arrested for using it when trying to capture a portal outside a post office in America.
The main change in my thoughts though is that the game is pretty much useless unless you live in a fairly busy town or city due to the sever lack of portals available to either capture or make your own (by severe lack I mean none in my town).
Of course you could submit a request to Google to have a portal added however there are some things that make this process a bit of a nightmare.
- You must take a photo of the requested location (public monuments and points of interest are the best)
- You must ensure location is enabled when taking a photo
- You must share the photo with NIA Super Ops (Google) which ends up being an E-Mail to the team
- The approval process takes 2-3 weeks
So until there are portals nearby there really is little point in having the game.
Don’t let these issues put you off though folks, as I said earlier this game is an amazing piece of work, the concept behind it and multiplayer element makes it worth having.
