[Game Review] The Amazing Spiderman

Following the recent release of the new The Amazing Spiderman movie, we have the usual straight from the big screen game. As an avid fan of Marvel comics, movies, games and android I therefore had no choice but to try this game out. Developed by Gameloft at a cost of £4.99 and taking up a sizeable 595mb of storage we would hope this game would be absolutely incredible!

To be honest when I first downloaded this game I wasn’t expecting a huge amount from it. Given the size and the price I was sceptical that it would do any good for the marvel franchise. However upon first glance graphically the game is stunning. Soaring through the streets of New York, web slinging between the buildings is an incredible feeling even on a small android device. The responsiveness of the control system is great, the web slings when you press the button and punches make impact at the right moment.

The layout of the control system is fairly simple and standard. There are two different layouts varying between fight mode and free roam. During the free roam mode quite simply we have a jump button which is used to jump then web sling. Touch the left side for joy stick and the right side to adjust the camera. As for fight mode there are a few extra buttons one to punch, one to react with Spidey Sense and the other for web based moves. This fight mode can be a bit hard as the buttons are only small and rather close together so it does get slightly annoying.

The storyline of the game is loosely based on the movie. We see the same villain with the same plot just a different order of events. Which if I’m honest is good. I wouldn’t be as interested in the game if it was exactly the same as the movie. The game is based around missions each of which generally last around three minutes, with the exception of the final mission that has a timer of 30 minutes on it, so it’s great for gaming on the move. We also see likenesses to to Rhys Ifans, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the game which is a nice touch.

There is very little this game could do to be improved. Perhaps the fact that there seems to be a glass ceiling over New York the Spiderman’s web attaches to rather than the buildings. This was emphasised in the movie at a few points so I feel that the game should have emphasised this point as well… He can’t web sling unless there is something for it to attach to! I also felt I had to play the game with the volume turned off because the voice actor for Spiderman had an incredibly annoying voice… but that’s me being picky. All in all a huge well done to Gameloft for an incredible action packed game.
