[App Review] Tweetlanes

It’s always wonderfully refreshing when an app comes along that just does it right. There are a lot of twitter clients out there as we all know but a new one has sprung up recently that i felt compelled to write about.

Tweet Lanes is, as the name suggests a twitter client, but with a few nice tweaks.

The first big plus is the UI. The man who designed this app has clearly taken the Android app design guidelines to heart as this app fits in beautifully with the Gmail, calendar, and email apps from stock ICS. The light grey and clean lines make it a joy to look at and even the blue accents are there from the holo theme. Media is presented well in the app with no ugly links showing up in your feed. Just the picture or video in a lovely shaded box.

The UI is smooth and simple with swipes left and right taking you to your timeline, mentions, your own tweets, and even retweets you have received there is even a simple drop down menu to quickly switch between accounts. This drop down box also shows some of the upcoming features as well as the settings. As i say the designer has clearly listened to how Google want their apps to look and it really does feel like a native app.

On a slightly different take from the normal twitter client Tweetlanes has no reply button. “NO BUTTON?” I hear you cry? fear not the designer has come up with a unique way of sorting @replies. The input box on Tweetlanes is like chromes omnibox, so is much more versatile than normal. If you want to reply to one tweet or even multiple tweets by different people you merely select the tweets you wish to use and the names appear in the context tweet box at the bottom. For me this is a big help as I get a lot of tweets from different people asking the same broad questions and now I can easily select them all in one big tweet.

Now before you go ahead and delete your main twitter client there are still a few issues to sort out. Currently there is no notification system or settings of any kind so it isn’t fully ready. Remember this is a brand new app and you could say its in Beta testing.

This is one of my favourite times in using a new app. The updates are coming thick and fast, one or 2 a day, which makes the whole process exciting and fun. I am eager to see how far this can go and urge everyone to give it a try. This could be big..

What do you guys think? have you tried it? What other features would you like to see?
