When I receive important mail, I file it away or (more usually) stick it in a pile for later filing. Often they never see the light of day again, but if I need to reference something it’s always a hassle searching for that elusive piece of paper.
If only there was a way to store these documents digitally so I can find them again easily. I have a great flat-bed scanner attached to my PC but unless someone gives me a photo I need to scan, it rarely gets used. So why don’t I use it? Well, every time I open my mail I’d need to fire up the PC, open the scanner software, wait for it to scan, open it in a paint package so I can crop it, and then save it in my Dropbox folder. I’m too lazy for all that, so it just ends up on top of the paper pile.
This is where Handy Scanner lives up to it’s name. No need for the PC or Scanner – just take a picture of the document with your phone, the app will detect the corners of the document (which you can adjust if it doesn’t get them quite right), correct the perspective and then give you a few filter options. The filters really do make your document more readable – I especially like the “Print Ready” filters which do a good job of giving you text on a white background.
You then give your document a name, and then have the option of adding more pages or saving it as a JPEG or PDF file. As usual on Android you can directly share the document with other apps such as Gmail or Dropbox.
The free version places a watermark on the PDF files, and has some limitations on the number of documents and scan quality. Paying for the Pro version removes these limitations.
I have tried similar apps in the past, but Handy Scanner really nails the smartphone scanning experience with it’s simple interface and powerful filters. If you’re thinking to get organised, and using your phone as a scanner is something that sounds useful to you, Handy Scanner is highly recommended.
