If you’ve got young children like myself, you’re always looking for ways to keep them amused (quiet). Drawing and coloring are always a popular pass-time, but it’s not always convenient to sit the child down with paper and crayons / pencils / pens. That’s not to mention the potential for pen marks ending up where they shouldn’t. It’s easy to see the appeal of a kid-friendly drawing app that you can pull out of your pocket at a moments notice, and “Color & Draw for kids” is an excellent solution.
The app begins by showing the last saved drawing on an easel, with icons to start a new drawing or select a black & white drawing to color. There are initially 50 illustrations to choose from which will be plenty to keep your little one amused. There are also in-app purchases of additional illustrations, but this may present parents with unwelcome pressure to pay from their kids.
On selecting a drawing, the app plays a voice recording to introduce the picture, often with a suggestion on how to color the illustration. The image fills the screen, with a good selection of coloring pencils and icons for an eraser, stickers, pencil size, opacity, save, say again and share at the bottom. Everything is easily selectable using swipe and touch gestures.
The phone screen size means coloring accuracy will never be ideal, but this won’t spoil the fun for the age range this app will appeal to. The developers recommend this app for 3 to 9+ year olds, but I don’t think this would hold the attention of the older kids in this range.
My 4-year-old daughter is likely a better critic of this app than I can be, and she loves it. She hasn’t used touch interfaces that much other than a few children’s book apps, but she caught onto this right away. She loves coloring, and especially likes adding stickers. The app automatically saves all her creations to a gallery, so there’s already quite a collection on my phone.
I can heartily recommend this app for all parents of young children.
