Yesterday HTC invited us to a super secret location to show off their latest handset the Sensation XL. The handset itself is really quite stunning & it’s 4.7″ WVGA screen does make the whole package quite large. The overall measurements are 70.63 x 130.6 x 9.9mm which does give it a bigger footprint then the Samsung Galaxy S II, but thanks to some clever design work the Sensation XL doesn’t actually feel too bulky in the hand, on the contrary it felt quite nice too hold.
On the pre-production model we saw there was Android 2.3.5 on board which is almost the latest version of Gingerbread & it will support front facing video calls using the built in Google Talk service. The Sensation XL is also packing Sense 3.5 which is a performance update to Sense 3.0 & it does make everything run buttery smooth with no slowdown shown during our hands-on with the device. HTC has also said that they are committed to supporting this device for at least 18 months after its launch with regular software updates.
Camera-wise the Sensation XL is flashing an 8 megapixel shooter on the back with a wide-angle lens, low light sensor, dual LED flash & support for 720p video included. In our test the quality of the photo’s produced were very good & much better then the traditional HTC Camera’s, likewise the video capture was good no ‘blocking’ observed & no slowdown or choppyness in the playback. The front camera is a different story though, it is 1.3 megapixels which on paper is fine for video chatting but the low quality of the image is magnified when viewed on the fantastically crisp display.
The biggest feature about the Sensation XL is the Beats by Dr Dre integration which comes in the form of custom equalizer presets designed specifically for the Beats line of audio products to ensure that the highest quality audio is produced & the music is delivered “As the artist intended”, HTC even include a set of urBeats earbuds in the box with a limited edition boxset coming bundled with the Beats Solo headphones, which did sound sublime.
On board storage is 16GB with 12.68GB (8.89GB for personal storage) of that actually user accessible which is a necessity when you consider that our demo unit had no micro SD card slot.
Perhaps the biggest shock however is that the Sensation XL does not sport a fashionable dual core chip, instead opting for the single core Qualcomm 8265 which is clocked to 1.5 GHz, which in our testing proved to be very quick & snappy indeed.
HTC stress that this is a entirely new product in the Sensation family & has been designed from the ground up with Beats in mind.
Carrier information is not available yet so there is no word on pricing or availability at this time.
