Recently XDA Recognized Developer TrevE exposed CIQ, a piece of rootkit software embedded into most mobile devices, from Android to Blackberry and many more, for serious security violations. Basically this software will stay hidden from view and is given rights to the device akin to root – meaning it can do whatever it wants to with your device and your information – without your permission to do so. You can find more information about CIQ and what it is from TrevE’s blog post.
Now with that being said, Carrier-IQ attempted to issue a C&D letter to TrevE on November 16. Instead of panicking, though I am sure there was a momentary emotion resembling that, TrevE contacted the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) and apprised them of the situation. They very quickly issued this reply.
XDA-Developer’s Portal Admin egzthunder1 posted a great writeup on November 14 and today – and I ask that you cross-post this information all over the internet. Do whatever you can in order to bring awareness to what Carrier-IQ is doing, and the damage it can cause.
