App Review: Pix-o-Reddit – A Reddit Picture Viewer With Sharing Delight And More

As someone who was involved in the beta testing with this particular application i am going to review, i am delighted to see how far it has come and boy is it a great one to have in that app draw.

Pix-O-Reddit from well known Android community developer Rascarlo/Rasdroid is a rather different application and has already excelled in what it does with a rapturous response from the Android community. Now, considering this is the developer first proper application released into the Android Market (Live wallpapers is his other app) it’s an amazing start to what work could follow.

The Review:

Now, if you have ever used the social news website Reddit or explored the many pictures that get posted in a whole host of categories on their, then with this app you will be using it now. Pix-o-Reddit gives you the opportunity to explore, browse and share pictures from categories.

I’ll start with the basics of getting around and then on to the sharing and other featured aspects afterwards. When you have installed the application and first launch it you are faced with the three screens below, the loading screens which displays nicely, and then a walkthrough of how to use Pix-o-Reddit itself, this i find a very useful and welcome addition as many an app i have used simply expects you to know or find everything out via trial and error.

If your familiar with the magazine style of Pulse news reader which is kind of Metro if you like than your going to be used to this too, it’s a particular favourite viewing style of mine and with this particularly application it suits it right down to the ground. Displaying the categories vertically, which you can scroll up and down to view them and it’s a simple, clean and easy interface to use. Within the category’s you will see the pictures and their caption, now you can scroll left to right within a particular category to go through all the pictures themselves, to the top right of the category you will see a refresh icon which obviously refreshes the category and if you tap the category title you will jump straight into that category by itself completely to view.

By pressing the menu button on your handset it pops a menu as you can see pictured below, it displays various options from logging in or out to your Reddit account, Help so you can revisit the walkthrough pages, About which directs you to how to contact the developer or comment on the app, but the main one is Manage Subscriptions. By tapping on Manage Subscriptions you will come to the screen where you can see your subreddits or categories if you like, if you don’t want one then simply tap the cross and it’ll get rid of it from your Pix-o-Reddit gallery browser. Now if you tap the list icon next to the home icon at the top you will see their are a fair few that are already available to select to add to your subreddit’s list, but you can also add your own with the plus icon at the bottom as well. I have about 8 at the moment for my taste and it pretty much every graphical and design aspect of photo’s, pictures and even funny gifs.

Now Going back to the main home screen and viewing all the subreddits, by clicking on one of them you will jump into a full scale page view of that image with four options. You have the cog icon which represents a popup which gives you the option to view the image in your browser, saving the image to your device or setting the image as your devices wallpaper, this is particularly nice set of features as if we really want the picture ourselves we can, if we see a great wallpaper in the wallpaper subreddit than it’s yours, and if you want to visit the original source well hey presto bam it’s there. The next icon along is the main selling point to Pix-o-Reddit! – it’s the share option and it utilizes the native Android share options, so anything that can share it will share it, so that includes Twitter, Google+, Facebook, Email, and all your favourites.  The next two icons are way to interact with Reddit and the image/post itself, with firstly a comment option which jumps you into the browser for the post directly, and the next one is to upvote or downvote if you wish the image/post.

That’s Pix-o-Reddit, now what i think. Well, I will admit even I wasn’t an avid Reddit picture viewer and it wasn’t until I used Pix-o-Reddit that i got back to using it again. I use it daily to share via Twitter, emailing friends, Facebook, and I’ve found some cracking wallpapers that i have used for my device and home pc too. It’s a simple, clean, responsive and easy to navigate metro/magazine like designed interface, which i love myself and if you want to browse interesting, funny, topical, general, wallpapers, well anything really with a picture then this is the app for you. I simply can not fault Pix-o-Reddit, because the purpose of the application has been achieved and in my view it’s unrivalled in the Android Market. It doe’s what it’s supposed to do, it does it well, it does it looking with a sleek interface, and it does it without any hiccups along the way.

Sharing all the great pictures from Reddit just got easier and it’s a joy to use with Pix-o-Reddit, as the developer says himself – “browse reddit pictures like a boss”.

Available now for Android version 2.1 and higher you can get Pix-o-Reddit now you can use the links below.
