The Android Market is packed with various clock widgets, most of which are based on a simple analogue or digital display surrounded by a variety of themed graphics. Occasionally an app comes along that sets itself apart from the crowd, and Advanced Clock Widget achieves this thanks to its ability to be customised to suit just about any Homescreen theme you place it on.
Simply stating that this widget has lots of options is something of an understatement. Every part it can be edited – text colour, font, size, background, position, layout – the available combinations seem endless.
The first job is to choose a widget ‘template’, all of which fit inside a 4×1 widget block. There are several different templates to choose from and each one is based around a main clock area, plus five text areas for displaying content. Each template has a different arrangement for the clock and content, and the selected template is displayed at the top of the options screens giving a live preview as changes are made. This is a nice feature as it avoids the need to repeatedly exit the app to check how changes are displayed.
The expected clock options are there: 12h/24h, AM/PM, colour, font, reflection and shadow, and the hours and minutes can be coloured separately.
The five editable text areas are what sets this app apart from the crowd. Each area can contain one of the standard text fields such as battery level, date, day/date, location, weather, memory status and location, to name a few. Upgrade to the Pro version and you can enter your own custom text string that includes data from the standard list.
Behind the clock and text areas is a background that is divided into different areas which can be coloured and set to any transparency from 0% to 100%, contrasting the text colours and blending with the Homescreen wallpaper in the best possible way.
ZOOPER, Inc have done a very nice job with Advanced Clock Widget. The extensive scope for personalisation together with the live preview as things are changed makes it rather fun to play with, not just set-and-forget. Users will enjoy trying new things just to see how they look, and when you remember that one of the main attractions of Android is the ability to theme and personalise the handsets, widgets like this make perfect sense.
